Yuanyuan Zhang investigates how practice transforms transient working-memory representations into long-term memory traces in the human brain. By combining intracranial EEG with learning and memory tasks, her work shows that hippocampal theta oscillations and ripple activity support increasingly rapid retrieval of specific memory instances as behavior becomes more automatic, and aims to reveal how these dynamics allow learned information to efficiently guide perception, attention, and decision making.
